Isn’t A Netbook A Laptop?

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Most people who have heard the term Netbook is always curious to know what exactly a Netbook is.

The answer can be summarized into pretty much one sentence. A netbook is a thin, lightweight, super portable laptop computer that has a screen size of 10 inches or less and operates on a very low power processor.

Netbooks are a great alternative to desktop and most laptop computers. However, they are only a great alternative if you don’t require anything special in a computer besides the general day-to-day tasks. For those of you wondering if a netbook is for you, here are the facts. You make the decision.

Processor: If you decided to purchase a netbook, yours will most likely come with an Intel Atom chip that acts as a processor. Because about 99% of the netbooks come with the exact same processor, you will need to spend some time researching the other features that come on certain models of netbooks.

Battery Size: If you purchase a netbook, you will probably end up with one that is equipped with a battery of 3 or 4 cell life. For some, that might not be enough juice to get them though the day. Because of this, some netbook companies have started to sell beefed up netbooks with larger batteries. The only down side to this is the netbook ends up being a bit bigger and more bulky.

Screen Size: About 95% of all netbooks have a screen size of ten inches or less. Pushing the boundaries that separate netbooks and laptops, some of the newer netbooks are selling with twelve inch screens.

Storage: Most of the netbooks today are coming equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA hard drive. The average size of hard drive is about 160GB.

Keyboard: The first wave of netbooks came with very small, very cramped keyboards. This wasn’t intentional, it just happened because of the small size of the device. Today, most netbooks have almost a full size keyboard. They are about 92% the size of a normal keyboard.

Wrap Up: No matter what you think, netbooks are a portable device that will be around for a long time. They are perfect for anyone who wants to always stay connected to the internet, always have access to email, and always be able to run small programs on their computers.
